Manager, Government Relations & Community Outreach

Purpose of Job

The Manager of Government Relations and Community Outreach will support the Executive Office in the implementation of Reading Is Fundamental's (RIF) strategic goals and activities. This position also supports the development and implementation of a variety of ongoing advocacy and public relations strategies that support RIF's mission, vision and legislative goals. This position is responsible for enhancing the overall public awareness of RIF; specifically in the areas of reading, children's and family literacy. The incumbent will foster relationships with political/policy offices, federal agencies, community groups and individuals associated with children's literacy to promote RIF's interests. He/she will also work closely with Programs and Marketing and Communication Departments to coordinate and implement communication and educational outreach efforts.

Scope

The Manager of Government Relations and Community Outreach reports to the Director of Government Relations and Community Outreach. This position is housed in the Executive Office (EO) and maintains frequent contact with staff in other departments, particularly the Executive Office (EO), Programs, and Marketing and Communications. Coordinates efforts across all departments to implement EO initiatives.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Guides efforts to provide information and resources about RIF's leadership in children's literacy to key policy/decision makers.
  • Coordination and oversight of RIF's Advocacy Network.
  • Works with program coordinators to generate local awareness of national programs and encourage constituent advocacy.
  • Coordinates scheduling and participates in meetings between senior RIF's staff, volunteer leadership and outreach to community leaders.
  • Represents RIF at public meetings, conferences and events as deemed appropriate.
  • Coordinates with internal departments in the delivery of public awareness and promotional campaigns.
  • Manages document production for the Dear Colleague campaign and awareness.
  • Updates RIF's website and CapWiz tool with relevant government relations information.
  • Prepares messaging for advocacy section of RIF's website, eAlerts and eNewsletter.
  • Assist Director and Coordinator of Government Relations and Community Outreach with cross-departmental projects and initiatives.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • BA/BS degree in government relations, political science or related fields or an equivalent combination of education and experience in legislative issues and/or state and national advocacy efforts. Hill experience and education related to legislative issues highly desirable.
  • Excellent organization skills. Ability to multi-task at strategic and detail level and take initiative and action as appropriate. Exceptional oral and written communication skills, interpersonal and teamwork skills. Flexible, with the proven ability to handle significant priorities in a fast-paced, growing work environment. Computer/Internet knowledge is required.
  • Ability to operate on limited and developing information. Must have strong initiative and able to operate independently.
