Capital One Supports RIF's Family Reading Programs with a $1.25 Million Grant
About the Partnership Thanks to a generous grant from Capital One Financial Corporation, more than 56,000 children and their families will now have an opportunity to participate in RIF's Family of Readers® program. Chief Financial Officer Gary Perlin announced the three-year, $1.25 million commitment at RIF's first annual Gift of Reading Gala in Washington on September 27, 2005. Family of Readers programs provide free books and literacy resources to children who are at risk of educational failure, and focuses primarily on the critical pre-school years.
A new partner and supporter of RIF, Capital One focuses its outreach program on enhancing educational access, community revitalization, and financial education. "Capital One is privileged to partner with Reading Is Fundamental to promote the important role families play in developing young children’s literacy skills," said Perlin. "Like RIF, we recognize that helping to build strong and healthy communities by focusing on our most precious resource—our children—benefits us all."
Each year Family of Readers reaches more than 130,000 children and their families, many of them enrolled in Head Start, Even Start and GED programs across the country. Through the program, RIF provides workshops and materials that encourage parents to engage their children in fun reading activities that will help them develop important literacy skills.
