Maryland's Riverdale Elementary School RIF Program Honored with Reading Is Fundamental's National Program of the Month Award

RIF's Programs of the Month Initiative Honors the Ongoing Efforts of Local Programs to Promote Children's Literacy.

WASHINGTON, January 19, 2010—Reading Is Fundamental (RIF), the nation's oldest and largest children and families' literacy nonprofit organization, has named the Riverdale Elementary School RIF Program as its national Program of the Month award recipient for January 2010.

"Reading Is Fundamental is honored to award this program for the work they have done on behalf of the children throughout the Riverdale, Md. community", said Carol H. Rasco, president and CEO of RIF. "They have taken an innovative approach that inspires young children to read. Their dedication to bringing the joy of reading to Riverdale is remarkable and the Riverdale Elementary School program is exactly what Reading Is Fundamental stands for in local communities."

While the school's Renowned Roadrunner Readers program (Triple R Club) is fairly new, the hard work and dedication of its volunteers has turned obstacles into opportunities for local children. Thanks to the efforts of many volunteers at Riverdale Elementary School, Reading Is Fundamental joined forces with the Triple R Club and turned even the most unenthusiastic of readers into authors by providing professionally-bound books for each child to write in. Donna Arquilla, the program's RIF coordinator, is a dedicated and energetic advocate for RIF. She worked for six years to partner with Reading Is Fundamental and she has made an enormous impact on many children's lives through initiatives like Second Cup of Coffee, a program in which parents can participate in workshops and demonstrations on how to encourage their children to read.

On RIF book distribution days, Riverdale Elementary School participates in a "Drop Everything and Read" activity in which each child reads for at least 20 minutes every night. In addition, RIF volunteers are at the school to read with the children and distribute RIF books for their personal libraries, making this an exciting event for young readers.

RIF's Programs of the Month initiative was launched to honor the ongoing efforts of local programs to fulfill the mission of RIF, which depends on programs like these to promote children's literacy. Thanks to thousands of volunteers, children all across the country are discovering the joy of reading.
