A Book Celebrating RIF's 40th Anniversary with Beloved Illustrators
This is a book about books. It’s also a book about the ability of children’s literature to change lives and open hearts. Each of the 40 illustrators represented here was asked to re-imagine a favorite book from their own childhood that propelled them along their life’s path of reading, writing, and creating. Illustrators, perhaps more than most of us, truly understand the power of art and imagination to inspire young readers to develop reading skills and begin a lifelong love affair with books. The 40 works of art contained inside these pages are a testament not merely to the artists’ skill, but to the extraordinary ability of illustration to serve as the gateway to the world of books. Carol Hampton Rasco President & CEO, Reading Is Fundamental The Art of Reading is on sale now at bookstores. The hardcover book ($19.99, ISBN: 0-525-47484-6) is published by Dutton Children's Books. No publication could be more fitting to honor the 40th anniversary of RIF than this elegantly designed, splendid homage to the joy of reading ... Fred Marcellino's cat and mouse reading together is a perfect cover and raises the curtain on this fascinating, royal appreciation and celebration of children's books, one that will excite children's literature mavens and inspire parents and teachers. — Kirkus (starred review)
This is a lovingly conceived, cohesive, and distinctively designed treasure ... This tribute is a thing of beauty and a joy for anyone whose life has ever been electrified by the experience of a book. — School Library Journal, August 2005
For 40 years, Reading Is Fundamental has been putting books into the hands of children across America. To commemorate its 40th anniversary, it has brought together 40 of the most celebrated children’s book illustrators working today and asked them each to re-imagine a classic book from their childhood. The result is a collection of beautiful and captivating images and insightful essays that remind us how a child’s early experiences with books can be powerful and lasting—and can help to create writers and artists. This gift book includes a foreword by Leonard S. Marcus, noted historian, author, and critic in the field of children’s literature.
