Highlights eNewsletter
July 1, 2003
The
RIF website is full of ideas for incorporating reading into your
everyday summer plans. Visit www.rif.org
to find activities, tips, reproducible worksheets, and more!
Before your
summer vacation, check out RIF's family activity ideas!
Whether you're headed for the beach or a national landmark, let
your first stop be your local library, where you can check out books
related to your itinerary! And before you travel, check out these
activity ideas from RIF:
- "Almost
There!" Travel Maps
When children follow their own homemade maps, they won't need
to ask you, "How long before we get there?" The information
will be right in front of them.
- When
In Rome
When in Rome, read about Rome! The same applies for everywhere
you travel with your children. Check out book suggestions for
a trip to the shore or a historic city.
- Reading
Passports

Before your children take off on a round-the-world reading odyssey,
issue them each a passport so they can keep track of the places
they visit.
- Backseat
Scavenger Hunt
If you prepare a backseat scavenger hunt for a long car ride,
your children may be too busy looking out the window to notice
how long you've been on the road.
- Detour,
Exit, Falling Rocks: Car Game
In this road activity, the riders on the left side of the car
take on the riders on the right side in a race to spot words that
begin with all the letters of the alphabet.

section of the website. Also, check out RIF's online Summer
