Recycling Leftover Books

What do you do with books that are left on the distribution table time and time again? Because books bought with the RIF discount must go to RIF children, below are some tips to help less popular titles find good homes:

  • Have children make book covers for the leftover books with a picture relating to the story on the front and reasons to "adopt" it on the back.

  • Ask your RIF volunteers or teachers to preview some of these books before the distribution. Having a few "read alouds" ahead of the distribution may help stir interest.

  • If there are a number of books centered on one topic, make that your next theme. For example, if you have a number of biographies left over, why not have a "career" or "famous persons" theme at your next distribution?

  • Hold an extra book distribution or allow the children to select two books at your final distribution.

  • Attach an older book to a newer one with a strong rubber band and put them on the distribution table. Children who choose the sets get "two for one."

  • Allow winners of the RIF Poster Contest, the National Reading Celebration, or your own reading incentive contests to choose extra books as their prizes.

  • Keep a "Birthday Box" of extra books. Let children choose from it on their birthdays. Don't forget to make provisions for birthdays that fall on weekends and holidays.

Please keep in mind:

  • RIF books are intended for personal ownership. Therefore, left over books should not be added to teachers' collections, classroom libraries or school libraries.

  • Your RIF program is designed to serve a consistent population. Please do not give left over books to children not enrolled in your RIF program.

  • Choosing a book is a key component of the RIF philosophy. Do not require children to choose a book that does not appeal to them.

  • Your program specialist can help you determine the best way to make sure all your books are used according to RIF guidelines. If you have any questions, please call your program specialist at the toll-free number below.
