Sample Parent/Guardian Letter

Dear Parent/Guardian:

Reading Is Fundamental, Inc. is the nation’s oldest and largest non-profit children’s literacy organization. Its purpose is to help young people discover the joy and acquire the habit of reading. RIF supports literacy development by providing free books for children to choose and keep, as well as encouraging them to read through motivational activities. Reading Is Fundamental, Inc. is a nationwide organization. However, a local RIF program run entirely by volunteers in your community will serve your child.

We are so pleased to provide your child with RIF books. During the months of (fill in distribution months here), your child will attend a book distribution where he or she will select one free book as our gift. Students who are absent on RIF Day will still receive their RIF books.

(Fill in RIF program name here) is excited about this service project. Access to interesting books is critical for your child’s success. But, just as crucial is your involvement. Each member of (fill in program name here) knows that reading is very important, especially encouragement and involvement at home. We hope you will read to and with your child often.

Towards this goal, we offer a few tips:

  • Read to your children often and encourage them to read to you.

  • Play word games like Scrabble, Hangman, etc.

  • Encourage writing: greeting cards, thank-you notes, letters, etc.

  • Make reading fun...not a chore.

  • Introduce your child to the library…make frequent visits.

  • Volunteer with RIF to demonstrate your commitment to literacy.

Thank you for allowing (fill in program name here) and RIF to become an active part of your child’s learning through reading. If you would like to help us make this RIF program a success, please contact (fill in RIF Coordinator’s name here) at (fill in phone number here).

Sincerely,

RIF Coordinator
