Frequently Asked Questions
National Book Program
Q: What is the National Book Program?
A: There are three components of the National Book Program:
- Book ownership is at the heart of all RIF programs. RIF volunteers select and buy inexpensive books to offer to youngsters at special events during which kids choose one book each to keep for their very own.
- Motivational activities show children that reading is fun! The activities can be as simple as a read-aloud or as intricate as a story-book character parade.
- Parental involvement is critical to children's success in school. Encouraging family members to participate in RIF is a rewarding experience for all involved.

Q: What can we expect from RIF's national headquarters?
A: Our staff offers wide-ranging assistance in conducting effective programs:
- Technical help.
We offer guidance with such tasks as fund raising, book ordering, and volunteer recruitment.
- Book discounts.
We negotiate nationwide discounts and other services from nearly 150 book suppliers. We then make the full list of these suppliers available to local RIF project volunteers so you can take advantage of the reduced-price offerings.
- Ideas and information.
A major source of help is the comprehensive RIF Handbook. It contains guidelines for running a project, recommendations for raising funds, and suggestions for lively activities.
- National programs and events.
To build excitement for reading, we invite all local projects to participate in RIF's National Reading Celebration, which includes our National Poster Contest, National Reading Challenge, and Reading Is Fun Week. We also host technical assistance meetings around the country.

Q: What happens when we've distributed our books and finished our project?
A: You must submit a year-end Performance Report to RIF to let us know how your project operated, as well as a program proposal form for the next year. Current programs will receive renewal documents via mail prior to their termination date. Here are the forms you'll need for running your RIF program.
