Q: What role should parents play? A: Parents should be as involved as possible in RIF. Parents can help in the selection and ordering of books, the setup/planning of the distribution, fundraising, and other crucial components of the RIF program. The program coordinator or someone on your committee should notify parents and guardians about the RIF program before the first distribution or the first major activity. Use letters, posters, or other means. The program coordinator should also recruit parents to help plan and operate the project. Q: What is expected from local coordinators? A: The success of RIF's 5,100 programs at over 25,000 sites around the country is in large part due to the efforts of local program coordinators. The RIF program's local coordinator is responsible for ensuring that the program follows RIF guidelines. This task includes ordering and distributing books, planning motivational activities, fundraising, and submitting paperwork to RIF's national office in a timely manner. For larger programs, these duties can be handled by more than one person. Q: How should programs use volunteers? A: RIF programs rely on the efforts of over 450,000 local volunteers, who can assist the program coordinator in carrying out his or her duties. The key is to draw on a volunteer's talents an outgoing volunteer may wish to read aloud to children, an organized volunteer may be a big help at a book distribution, while a math-oriented volunteer can help with invoice paperwork. For more information, read our information about volunteers or the "Volunteer Involvement" section of the RIF Handbook.
