Reading Is Fundamental

Categories:

Arts & Crafts

Ages:

3-5, 6-8, 9-12

Summary:

Teams of children sculpt clay to try to get their team to guess a familiar book title.

Time: 10-15 minutes

Materials

  • Modeling clay or dough
  • Paper
  • Timer

Set up

  • Make modeling clay. (Adjust recipe quantity according to the number of children.)

RECIPE: In mixing bowl, combine the following Ingredients:

- 1 cup flour
- 2 teaspoons of vegetable oil
- 2/3 cup water
- 4 tablespoons of salt
- 2 teaspoons of cream of tartar

  • Create a list of books familiar to the children and copy the titles onto little slips of paper.
  • Divide the children into groups of 3 to 4 and give each group a mound of modeling clay and several of the slips of paper.

Directions

  • Arrange children in circles and have them choose a sculptor.
  • Ask the sculptor to pick a slip of paper and then use the clay to sculpt elements of the title so that the other children can guess what the title is.
  • Children have one minute to guess the correct title within their groups. (You may want to increase the time for younger children.)
  • The next child then sculpts the title and the others guess.
  • Play until every child has had a chance to sculpt or until time is up.
