Initial Planning for a New RIF Coordinator
Ample planning, carried out well in advance of program milestones, will help your RIF program operate smoothly and ensure you meet all guidelines. Running a successful RIF program takes a lot of hard work from you and the other volunteers you enlist, but it's well worth it. Here are a few tips to help you begin planning:
- Spend some time with an account support representative who serves your region to review your RIF proposal and verifying that your RIF contract is current.
- Learn your RIF Account Number and keep it handy for all correspondence and telephone calls.
- Read and review your RIF handbook thoroughly. If you don't have a RIF Handbook, download a copy now. Again, call your unit account support representative if you have any questions.
- Talk with your programs former coordinator and former volunteers, if possible. Find out where past reports and administrative materials are kept, where leftover books are stored, and what plans have already been made.
- Establish a calendar of important RIF dates and deadlines: book ordering, motivational activities and book distributions, and start and end dates of your contract.
- Recruit volunteers; the sooner, the better! Begin by asking former volunteers to help you recruit new volunteers. Assemble a group of supporters and delegate some of the tasks to them. Be sure to share RIF guidelines with them.
- Once you've got all the help you need, form a book selection committee of at least three people. Form other committees to do fundraising, plan motivational activities and book distributions, and plan and carry out other tasks.
- Request catalogs from your choice of RIF book suppliers in the RIF Book Supplier Profile. If you don't have a copy of the Book Supplier Profile, request one from your account support representative.
