Barbara Sovereign Barbara Sovereign has been a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, a national educational honorary, since 1983, and became a volunteer reader for its local Reading Is Fundamental program in 1998. In 1999 she became the co-coordinator of the local RIF program. Sovereign received bachelor's degree from De Pauw University and a master's in reading from LaVerne University. She has taught in public schools in Indiana, Illinois, Virginia, and California in elementary classrooms and in an ESL program. She has served as program coordinator of a Chapter I program in a Catholic school and served as a reading specialist and reading recovery teacher in the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District. While teaching she served on the board of the Monterey County Reading Association as well as a member of the board of the annual Asilomar Reading Conference. After retiring in 1997, she became a consultant for the Monterey County Office of Education 'America Reads' program. She helped develop a tutorial manual for 'America Reads' tutors for the Panetta Institute at California State University at Monterey Bay. She and her husband have lived in Indiana, Illinois, Washington, D.C., the Netherlands, Hawaii and Monterey, Calif. Their daughter is an elementary school principal in San Diego and a son is in information technology. They are also grandparents of Zach and Alia. |
