Crestview Elementary in Cottage Grove, Minnesota Crestview Elementary PTSA has been a Books for Ownership program for 20 years! Now, as a locally funded program, it proudly serves 450 children in grades K–6. Earlier this year, Crestview's students raised more than $2500 for RIF and new library books. In celebration, their principal, Rich Romano, dressed as Snow White and visited each classroom. Romano's fairy tale journey was featured in the local newspaper. Read the full article below. On Feb. 8, Romano promised he would wear a dress and visit any classroom that raised at least $300 for new library books, replacing worn books and the Reading is Fundamental literacy program. Winners would all get a root beer float party. Students were also treated to a visit by “TC,” Minnesota Twins Baseball Team mascot, who helped kick off the read-a-thon held Feb. 22. Children raised money for the read-a-thon by collecting pledges from their families and friends.
With a purse, borrowed from Loeshek’s daughter, and beaded necklaces, Romano wore the costume. When the dress could not be fully zipped up the back, Loeshek said the princess had put on a few pounds. Romano took the whole experience in stride. He made brief visits to classrooms that did not make their goal to reward them for their effort that resulted in more than $2,500 in donations. In classes that made their goal, he served root beer floats to each student. “Say, ‘thank you, princess,’” he said as he placed a root beer float in front of students. Classes that achieved the $300 goal included those taught by Sheila Slowinski, Linda Laue, Sara Bebeau, and kindergarten classes taught by Nate McGuire and Amanda Jacoby. After next year’s read-a-thon, who knows? There might be visiting dwarfs. Source: Spooner, Judy. "Crestview principal pays visit as 'princess.' South Washington County Bulletin, March 12, 2008. |
