Program Spotlight

Saville Elementary in Riverside, Ohio

Saville Elementary is a new RIF program that is locally funded and serves 370 students in grades K-4.

On Read Across America Day (March 3), Saville held its first book distribution in celebration of Dr. Seuss's birthday.  The principal, dressed as the Cat in the Hat, led a parade in the school parking lot, driving a shiny, red Saturn convertible.

Saville's Suessical distribution was featured as a video and article by the local newspaper.  Click here to watch the video.

Cat in the Hat Sends 'Sub' to Deliver Books to School

Principal Steve KandelThough he drove from very far with loads of free books in his car, the Cat in the Hat didn't make it to Saville Elementary School to celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday. Luckily, he found a stand-in to deliver all his books. "You guys didn't know this, but the real Cat in the Hat was scheduled to come in today," Principal Steve Kandel, dressed as the Cat in the Hat, told an assembly of rapt students.

As Kandel explained it, the Cat in the Hat's cat mobile broke down in front of the Saturn of North Dayton dealership in Huber Heights. The Cat asked Kandel to deliver the books for him, and the dealership donated two cars.

"I said, 'let's drive these cars and these free books to Saville Elementary,'" Kandel said to the sound of gasps and thunderous clapping.

It was all part of the school's celebration of the 104th birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss, and Read Across America Day on March 3. It started with a rather Seussical fire drill, during which Kandel led a costumed paraded around the parking lot in the back of a red convertible, followed by Thing 1 and Thing 2, played by intervention specialist Amy Mareli and paraprofessional aide Jamie Ramsey.

Saville studentsBut the real excitement came from dozens and dozens of new, shiny and free books—fiction and nonfiction books, picture books and chapter books, biographies and books of poetry—for students to select.

The books were purchased with grant money, Kandel said. "We had originally talked about keeping our book distribution simple, but it grew. We decided to schedule it with Dr. Seuss's birthday and Read Across America Day."

The purpose was to give kids a book for their home libraries, Title 1 reading teacher Sue Buck said. "The whole reason is to promote literacy through the children's families and to promote a love of reading." Buck had read that Saturn was involved with Read Across America Day, prompting her to Saville studentscontact Saturn of North Dayton. Saturn also donated lots of birthday cake served at lunchtime.

"We've been a part of Read Across America for a long time," Erik Ganger, a sales consultant at Saturn, said. "This was a great opportunity for community involvement."
