Oscar Cux knows what it's like for the students at Huerta Elementary School who often lack role models who value reading. As a child growing up in Guatemala, Cux did not have access to many books, and reading wasn't a priority for his family. Despite this challenge, Cux has sought to turn Huerta Elementary School into a community of readers by reaching out to both the students and their families. Each week, using various mediums, Cux creates a poster-sized copy of the week's read-a-loud selection. These posters are hung at the library’s entrance to provide advertising for Cux’s lively readings, which include the use of costumes, props, and a variety of characters that Cux plays himself. Cux's art, which now includes hand-colored bookmarks designed and drawn by students in California, are highly regarded and often traded among students. Before he was able to host reading sessions in the school's library, Cux first had to organize the library. For years, library books were not shelved. Instead, they were stored in bins throughout the library space. Finding books was difficult, and lending or borrowing them virtually impossible. With the assistance of teacher and student volunteers, Cux created a welcoming library space where readers can locate their perfect book and where he is able to host RIF events. Cux has reached parents, many of whom have literacy issues themselves, by establishing a reading program specifically for parents. By training parents and helping them integrate reading into their family's daily lives, Cux offers new opportunities for parents and children to read together. |
