Volunteer of the Year Award

How to Participate

Remember, it's important to celebrate the time and effort your volunteers have put forth for your RIF site. Follow these six easy steps to recognize your local nominee and all of your volunteers.

Step 1:  Make a list of all your volunteers.

To recognize and thank your volunteers, you need to know who they are. It’s important to track the individuals who support your program and how they contribute.

Step 2:   Select an extraordinary volunteer to represent your RIF  site.

Volunteers exhibit different levels of commitment and perform various duties. Have the RIF coordinator, the authorizing official, and/or a committee select and nominate a volunteer or volunteer coordinator who best fulfills all of the criteria outlined in the nomination form to represent your site for the national competition.

Step 3:  Enter the national competition.

Submit a nomination by March 6, 2009. If you nominate a volunteer, he or she will have the chance to be named one of three regional winners and you will have the chance to accompany the winner to Washington, D.C. Every nominee and nominator will receive a commemorative RIF pin.

Step 4:  Organize a local celebration for your volunteers.

Start planning an event to recognize all your volunteers during National Volunteer Week (April 19-25). The event can be a party or small ceremony after a book distribution. Send out a media advisory to invite media to cover your event. media advisory to invite media to cover your event.

Step 5:  Celebrate your volunteers.

Honor your site’s local nominee and all of your volunteers. Pass out certificates, provide light refreshments, and thank all your volunteers for a job well done. Distribute a news release to local media outlets notifying them about your nominee and the event.

Step 6:  Recognize your volunteers throughout the year.

There are several ways to continue showing your appreciation for the work your volunteers provide. It’s important to let them know that you value their time and energy.
