Volunteer of the Year Award
Volunteer Recruitment
Volunteers are critical for running a successful RIF program. It’s important to involve parents, teachers, and other members of the community in your efforts. Remember, everyone is a potential volunteer and may offer significant contributions to enhance your RIF program. Here are some helpful hints for recruiting volunteers.
- Volunteering may involve a one-time commitment or an ongoing one. Provide volunteer opportunities that demand different levels of commitment.
- Make a list of potential volunteers. RIF volunteers come in all forms—don’t leave anyone out!
- Have children make invitations, letters, and posters inviting volunteers.
- Advertise your distribution theme in a community newspaper or newsletter. Ask for volunteers in a particular field or with a specific interest. (For example, if you are featuring an animal theme, ask for pet store employees, veterinarians, or animal lovers.)
- Ask to make a brief presentation at a meeting of a local service organization such as the Kiwanis or Rotary Clubs. Include photos, anecdotes, and background information about your program.
- Tell a friend. Ask each volunteer to bring a friend to help out. This will double the number of volunteers. Don't ask too much of one person or group. Describe your project and be specific about what you want each volunteer to do. Make a checklist of jobs and allow volunteers to choose what they want to do. Here is a sample list.
- Be a guest reader
- Dress up as a storybook character
- Place bookplates inside books
- Review book catalogs and suggest 10 titles to order
- Provide a snack to serve at the next distribution
- Direct a craft or art session during a motivational activity
