Volunteer of the Year Award

Recognition of Volunteers

Everyone likes to be recognized for hard work and a job well done! Make it a priority to consistently recognize and reward those who help make your RIF program a success. Recognizing your volunteers will make them feel good and will encourage them to continue dedicating their time and talent to your RIF program.

  • Say “thank you”—It is important to say "thank you" at the time the task is completed or soon thereafter. This can be done in person, via email, a telephone call, or artwork and cards designed by students.

  • Plan a party—Whether it's a potluck or a catered event, celebrate your volunteers with a party.

  • Create a Volunteer Wall of Fame—Take candid photos of your volunteers as they perform services or participate in meetings. Develop the photos larger then usual and mount them on a bulletin board with a volunteer themed title, e.g. "The Many Faces of Service.”

  • Ask Local Businesses to Provide Incentives—Discounts or coupons from local businesses make great give-aways for volunteers. Distributing bumper stickers or other promotional items such as key chains and t-shirts are also good ways to recognize volunteer contributions.

  • Namesake Award—Create an award for a particularly committed, longstanding volunteer. You can offer this award annually to an outstanding RIF volunteer in your community.

  • Volunteer of the Week Program—This program can include a visible sign or bulletin board saluting your volunteer, a weekly brown bag lunch with the volunteer as the focus of attention, a lapel pin that symbolizes the person's entry into a distinguished "volunteers of the week" society, and a letter of commendation to the volunteer's boss and/or family.

  • Award Certificates—Present a certificate of appreciation to each volunteer.

  • Other Recognition Awards—Nominate a volunteer for recognition awards such as RIF’s Anne Richardson Volunteer of the Year Award. There are numerous awards from national
nonprofit organizations that honor the efforts of extraordinary volunteers. Check out the websites for the Points of Light Foundation and the USA Freedom Corps for service awards honoring volunteerism and civic service.

  • Celebrate National Volunteer Week—This annual national event recognizes local, state, and national volunteers. This is a great opportunity to bring together your whole community to celebrate the wonderful contributions of everyone involved at your RIF site.
