Honoring Your RIF Volunteers
Celebrating volunteers during Volunteer Recognition week is certainly important. Yet in order to keep volunteers motivated and, ultimately, provide the greatest benefit to the children RIF serves, RIF coordinators should consistently recognize volunteers throughout the year. To make your programs run smoothly and show your appreciation for volunteers:
-
Orient volunteers to RIF and their role in the larger organization.
-
Train volunteers for tasks expected of them.
-
Be sure nonvolunteer staff treats volunteers with respect and kindness.
-
Give capable volunteers more challenging jobs.
-
Request feedback from volunteers and involve them in program decisions and planning.
-
Offer your volunteers administrative and moral support, especially when their jobs require more responsibility and authority.
-
Recognize volunteers for successful projects and milestones--this may mean a simple "thank you," sometimes the best way to express your gratitude.
"Most volunteers don't want something really elaborate," says Kirsten Morris, Volunteer Coordinator for RIF's Delaware Initiative. "They just want to know they are appreciated and that their work makes a difference to someone. For most people, the reward is intrinsic."
