Suggested Tasks for Your Volunteers
1. Guest Readers/Presenters Guest Readers/Presenters attend one (or more!) of the program’s RIF distributions. These volunteers usually spend 20-30 minutes reading aloud to a group of children, presenting a talent, sharing their culture or talking about their careers or hobbies. When preparing to read aloud, volunteers choose books with assistance from the RIF coordinator or classroom teacher. Including preparation time, this activity takes about 1-2 hours per distribution.
2. Book Selection/Planning Committee This is a great volunteer opportunity for parents and community members. Members of the book selection/planning committee work with the RIF Coordinator to develop themes and activities for the distributions, assist with paperwork and collaborate to order appropriate books for their program. Ideally, this committee has numerous members who are most active immediately preceding a book distribution. Generally, committee members spend 1-2 hours per week during peak planning periods.
3. Parent Liaisons Parent Liaisons spread the word about upcoming events. They bring an understanding to parents and guardians about what RIF does and can help you enlist more volunteers for your event. Bilingual parent volunteers are incredibly helpful in communicating with parents and families who speak another language! Parent Liaisons’ time is requested as needed by the RIF Coordinator, but should not exceed more than 1-2 hours a month.
4. Publicity Liaisons These important volunteers "get the word out" about the great work RIF does in the community. Volunteers create written materials to promote RIF events to local newspapers, television and radio. They also follow-up print materials with phone calls, increasing the possibility of local media coverage. Publicity Liaisons are most busy in the 2 weeks prior to a distribution.
5. Fundraising Committee This committee never has enough volunteers! Members meet monthly to perform tasks such as preparing publicity and thank you packets for existing donors, identifying potential sources of funding and contacting local businesses or corporations. The committee also plans events to raise local funds. This standing committee usually requires 1-2 hours per week.
6. Artists Volunteer artists work with the RIF Coordinator to create murals or posters to promote reading and generate excitement about upcoming RIF events. Artists are encouraged to present their ideas to the RIF coordinator. Time allocation is solely determined by the scope of individual projects.
