Welcome to RIF's CRC Partnership Kit! Read With Me: The 2005 RIF® Community Reading Challenge (CRC), presented by MetLife Foundation, fosters a new generation of lifelong readers by bringing the entire community together to participate in two fun-filled weeks of literacy activities.
Each year, RIF sites across the country select a two-week period between January 2 and March 2 to participate in the challenge. Then these sites organize literacy activities that motivate children to read and engage the entire community. Events can include family literacy nights, group read-aloud sessions, guest readers, book buddies, RIF book distributions, and reading rallies. Every activity helps the site earn points to win a state or national award and additional funds to buy books.
Most importantly, the CRC is an opportunity for your organization to get involved in children’s literacy on a local level.
Why you should get involved When you participate in a CRC nearby, you can offer your employees or members an opportunity to directly impact the lives of children in your community. By serving as guest readers, buddy readers, or other event volunteers, everyone who gets involved can walk away feeling as though they have played a role in inspiring more children to read.
Working one-on-one with a local school or literacy program will also demonstrate your organization’s commitment to literacy to your entire community. Since most RIF sites publicize their challenge activities, you may even receive recognition for your contribution. You’ll also build lasting relationships with school administrators, children, various organizations, and others across the community.
How to do it Start planning your role in a CRC event in your community today! RIF sites will be conducting challenge activities beginning January 2 through March 2, 2005. If you have any questions about the CRC or need extra help as you gather challenge participants, contact Seung Yu at 202-673-1614 or syu@rif.org.
We hope you find the Community Reading Challenge to be an enjoyable, productive experience that will help your organization take a literacy leadership role in your community and receive recognition for the work you are doing.
GOOD LUCK, and HAPPY READING!
