Question 2
Do you have any recommendations of books or websites that might help me with my dyslexic son?  I would be thankful for any help because I believe that the most important thing I can teach him is how to read.

Answer:
First, you should try to verify that your son is dyslexic through a qualified testing examiner. In the case that he is dyslexic, you should be able to access special services to help him with his particular needs, most especially with phonological awareness.

There is some nice information about classroom accommodations and advice about how children with dyslexia learn at www.ldonline.org. Also, you may want to contact the International Dyslexia Association at www.interdys.org. There are many special tutoring programs for students with dyslexia; one is the www.dyslexiatutoringprogram.org

You are to be commended for trying to get your son help. He will need a balance of intense practice with sounds and letters and reading authentic books in order to stay motivated.  You can find ways to make learning sounds fun through rhyming games and word plays. And, of course, continue to read interesting stories with him daily so that he can enjoy time comprehending a story while practicing isolated sounds at other times. The balance of the two approaches is extremely important.
