Literacy: A Family Matter

403
  Summary and Key Messages

What Role Do Families Play in Literacy?

Family involvement is one of the key components of children's success in school—and in reading, in particular. Family support in a child's education is statistically correlated with academic learning.

Involvement takes many forms. At home, it entails reading aloud to children, checking on homework assignments, limiting TV viewing, establishing a daily family routine, monitoring out-of-school activities, talking with and listening attentively to children, setting high standards, and praising children's efforts.

Family involvement also includes being an active citizen who advocates for better education at the local and state levels, who votes in School Board elections, and lobbies for challenging academic standards. By partnering with schools and teachers, families can ensure that children receive full support as learners.
