Summer Reading: A Bridge to Literacy

407

  Summary and Key Messages

Two Boys Reading in ParkSummertime reading highlights the conundrum faced by parents and teachers as to how much of summer vacation time should be set aside for reading.

We are caught between two contradictory messages: children — especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds — need to read over the summer to keep from losing academic skills. The research literature is very clear on this. On the other hand, aren’t children entitled to a vacation from the rigors of academia? They need time to play and “be children.”

The best hope of resolving this issue is to expose children to reading programs that are not a chore, but are actually pleasurable. Required reading lists, which many schools (particularly private schools) assign, may keep skills up, but are in danger of turning children into aliterate readers who don’t turn to books as a recreational haven. Even less effective are reading requirements that carry a penalty with them for noncompletion. Reading motivation thus becomes negative motivation. More effective are reading programs that inherently motivate children.
