Picture Perfect: The Art of Illustration

Show 502: Summary and Key Messages

Children’s book illustration is both an integral part of the literary composition of a book as well as an art form in its own right. When they first appeared in the 18th century, most children’s book illustrations were confined to frontispieces and drawn by artists who remained anonymous.  Late in that century, illustrations by Thomas Bewick (1753-1828) and William Blake (1757-1827) began to appear in British children’s books, laying the foundation for the practice of commissioning well-known artists to illustrate texts.

As they have evolved over time, illustrations have become a way of drawing readers into books. They translate an author’s words into a world even nonreaders can relate to. They convey the excitement, mood, and enthusiasm the author is trying to get across in text. While words appeal to a child’s mind, illustrations appeal to his gut.

In modern children’s literature, the illustration has taken a more prominent role. Illustrations do not just convey the author’s intent, they convey meaning in their own right. They are used to enhance literacy and to motivate readers. They also provide comfort and understanding.
