Writing Matters: Children as Authors

Show 503 Summary and Key Messages

Kid & Teacher WritingBecoming a skilled writer is not a straightforward process. One thing we do know, though, is that children who are motivated to write write often. And one of the great motivators for writing is to publish children’s writing.

Through preparation, teachers can set the stage for publishing students’ work. This sends children the message that their writing has a purpose above and beyond getting a grade. Research confirms children learn to do their best writing when they know it is for an audience. Techniques such as Writers’ Workshops encourage students to become involved in the writing process by using their own topics and writing for their own reasons.
