Literacy: A Parent-Primer, Part 1: Pre-school
Summary and Key Messages
Children’s development of literacy skills is an ongoing process. It doesn’t only take place during school hours when teachers are concentrating on reading and writing instruction. On the contrary, literacy is learned in big and little ways, through direct instruction and through modeling, at school and at home. Parents—no matter what their own literacy skills may be—have a major role to play in helping their children become good readers and writers.
Parents can best assist their young children in this role when they show their children that they value reading and writing and take the time to read with their child every day. What parents do at home with their children is certainly of equal import with what children learn at school. Good readers don’t just happen.
