The Lesson Plans area at this site provides poetry lesson plans for 3 grade levels: PreK-2, 3-5, and 6-8. Each lesson plan incorporates poetry books and shows how to link poetry across the curriculum. For example, in Fruit Salad, designed for Pre-K-2, children work together to write free form poems about three fruits, then combine the poems into one poem about fruit salad.

National Poetry Month

The Academy of American Poets, founded in 1934, supports American poets at all stages of their careers, fosters the appreciation of modern poetry, and sponsors national fellowships and prizes. Since 1996 the Academy has designated April as National Poetry Month. During this month-long celebration, publishers, booksellers, literary organizations, libraries, schools, and poets work together to celebrate poetry through readings, festivals, book displays, workshops, and other events. The 2001 celebration includes an opportunity for the American public to nominate their favorite poets for future stamps.

In addition:

The Urban Libraries Council (www.urbanlibraries.org) is sponsoring poetry readings at major public libraries throughout the month.

The Children’s Book Council (www.cbcbooks.org) is sponsoring the Young People’s Poetry Week, April 16-22. PBS will air Poetic License, an hour-long documentary on teen poetry slams. (To find out when it will be aired in your area, check your local PBS listings or visit the web site at www.poeticlicense.org.)

Volunteer poetry fans in Ketchikan, Alaska will read their favorite poems on KRBD-FM. (Contact Phoebe Newman at pnewman@ktn.net to learn how to enjoy this event through a live web stream.)

The Academy and its partners will distribute 180,000 National Poetry Month posters to schools, libraries, and bookstores. For information on national and local events, visit the National Poetry Month page at the Academy’s web site: www.poets.org/npm.
