Clifford Cares www.weta.org/community/events/cares.html Washington PBS station WETA is heading up a public service project designed to promote literacy and community involvement, working in partnership with Greater DC Cares and Scholastic, Inc. --publisher of Norman Bridwell's books featuring the adventures of Clifford. Through the Clifford Cares initiative, 50,000 books will be distributed to local nonprofit institutions serving children and families. First Day of School America The First Day of School Foundation encourages schools to welcome parents as visitors on the first day of school and urges businesses to give parents the day off. The Houston READ Commission Since 1988, the Houston READ Commission (HRC) has been building a coalition of literacy providers and agencies to support family literacy. The 135-member coalition is the largest in the country. If All of Rochester Read the Same Book www.wab.org/allofrochester/allofrochester.html In order to connect people to the experience of literature and community, the whole community reads and discusses one book of literary fiction throughout the year, leading up to a three-day residency in the community by the book's author. Institute for Responsive Education (IRE) Since 1973, the IRE has supported partnerships among schools, families, and communities to help ensure high quality educational opportunities for all children. The Institute is based on the philosophy that school, family, and community partnerships are essential components of any effort to improve schools and raise educational standards. Literacy and Community Service Networks www.strom.clemson.edu/teams/literacy This site, maintained by Clemson University, promotes literacy projects incorporating action research, writing, and public service in schools and communities, and supports learning activities that establish students and teachers as advocates for their communities. NashvilleREAD/Leading to Read www.nashvilleread.citysearch.com NashvilleREAD's Leading to Read initiative involves tutoring reluctant readers in grades 1 through 3, training parents to help their children with reading skills, and coordinating the work of Community Reading Partners. NashvilleREAD also engages in community service projects and participates in related literacy outreach events. National Education Association's (NEA) Read Across America Every year the NEA holds a reading celebration on March 2nd, the birthday of Dr. Seuss. In cities and towns across the nation, teachers, teenagers, kindergartners, librarians, politicians, actors, athletes, parents, grandparents, and others read a book in praise of literacy Ohio Reads A partnership of schools, community organizations, businesses, libraries, parents, and students working together, this site highlights initiatives aimed at making Ohio's kindergarten through grade 4 students proficient readers. Read Boston www.cityofboston.gov/readboston ReadBoston is a children's literacy campaign that unites families, schools, and the community behind the goal of helping Boston's children become able readers by third grade. Reading Pathfinder www.readingpath.org This site,maintained by the Department of Education and the ERIC Clearinghouse on Elementary and Early Childhood Education, provides to individuals and businesses information about supporting children's literacy. Search Institute The Search Institute provides a wide range of publications and practical tools to equip community organization leaders, parents, and young people to build developmental assets, and to offer opportunities for leaders and practitioners engaged in asset building to learn from each other.
