Authors and Illustrators on the Web This alphabetical listing of children's authors on the Internet identifies those who write nonfiction. The Web sites included here are authors' personal sites, as well as those maintained by fans, scholars, and readers. Children's Literature: Useful Sites for Teachers, Librarians, and Students At this site, American Library Association staff provide resources for professionals who teach literature, including nonfiction.Listservs are of particular interest. Elementary Science Integration Project The Elementary Science Integration Projects (ESIP) support content-rich, student-centered practices that promote inquiry-based science and literacy instruction. ESIP's Web site features resources for educators, including information on conferences and workshops, a searchable database of science trade books, and a lending library of books for local teachers. The National Council for Teachers of English (NCTE) Orbis Pictus Award for Outstanding Nonfiction for Children NCTE, through the Committee on the Orbis Pictus Award for Outstanding Nonfiction for Children, has established an annual award for promoting and recognizing excellence in the writing of nonfiction for children. The name Orbis Pictus commemorates Orbis Pictus: The World in Pictures (1657) by Johannes Amos Comenius, considered the first book actually planned for children. Newspaper in Education Newspaper in Education (NIE) is a cooperative effort between schools and newspapers to promote the use of newspapers as an educational resource. The Newspaper Association of America Foundation is the administrative organization for more than 700 NIE programs in the United States. The Foundation provides resources and training to newspapers and educators on using newspapers in schools, helps newspapers develop strategic plans for promoting and marketing their NIE services, and represents newspapers with a broad variety of educational partners. Open Directory Project: Children's Literature Authors This site provides an alphabetical listing of children's authors (including nonfiction authors), as well as biographies and reviews of works. Project 2061 The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) founded Project 2061 in 1985 to help all Americans become literate in science, mathematics, and technology. Its work has earned the project a reputation as the "single most visible attempt at science education reform in American history" (Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development, 1996). The organization has developed benchmarks for science in grades K-12 and identified classroom resources for teachers. Project 2061 produces numerous resources, such as Vital Connections: Children's Books and Science, and conducts ongoing professional development workshops for teachers.
