RIF Net Is...

rifnetlogoRIFNet, RIF's distance-learning initiative, delivers literacy-based programming to educators, librarians, and parents nationwide via satellite television, videotape, CD-ROM, and the Internet. Videotapes may be purchased for viewing.

Funded by a Star Schools grant from the U.S. Department of Education and operated through RIF’s national office, RIFNet is a consortium of RIF, the Connecticut-based Area Cooperative Educational Services, the Association of Educational Service Agencies, the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) and Phoebus Communications.

RIFNet's video series include:

Gateways to Early Literacy

This program consists of four half-hour videos that explore the critical ways family childcare providers can enrich and support children's early language and literacy development.

Each video features nationally recognized early childhood educators and literacy experts who highlight aspects of quality family childcare that support children's early literacy development. The programs depict literacy-rich environments with scenes from a variety of family childcare sites. Interviews with the providers themselves illustrate and explain the ways in which they promote young children's literacy development.

RIF Exchange
This video series is designed to keep RIF coordinators, educators, librarians, and parents informed on the latest developments and trends in children's literacy.

Each show profiles exemplary RIF programs, offers practical tips and strategies for coordinators, and highlights great books to share with children.

RIF in Action
RIF in Action is a four-part video series distributed to each new RIF coordinator when he or she begins a RIF program. The videos give viewers an understanding of how to make RIF programs work more effectively in their communities. Each program is 30 minutes long and features supplemental information detailing specific tasks associated with running a RIF program. The topics covered in this series include:

  • selecting books;
  • planning and running book distributions;
  • creating community partnerships; and
  • fundraising strategies.
