Heidi OklaHeidi Okla

  • RIF alum years: sometime in the mid-1980s.

  • How long were you in the RIF program? 1 or 2 years (not sure).

  • As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? A movie star or a teacher.

  • Now that you are grown up, what do you do? I’ve been working as a developer of educational websites.

  • Favorite childhood book: Charlotte’s Web and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.

  • What children’s book character are you most like? I used to think that I was supposed to be a lot like Johanna Spyri’s Heidi. I was very close with my German grandfather, and I always imagined myself as that Heidi. I can also always identify with maternal Wendy and her love of stories in J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan.

  • 80'sFavorite RIF memory: I just recall the excitement of the book distribution. What fun to pick out a new book!

  • Do you still have any of your RIF books? I was at my parent's home recently rummaging through some old things, and I found a RIF book that I chose called A Dog Called Kitty.

  • What do you read now? I still read a lot of children's books – partly because of my work, but mostly because I just love children’s literature. I also read a lot of best sellers, pop culture magazines, and a variety of websites.
