Laura Harrison

  • RIF KidRIF alum years: 1972 and 1973

  • How long were you in the RIF program? Two years.

  • As a kid, what did you want to be when you  grew up? A poet.

  • Now that you are grown up, what do you do? I am a children's book specialist. I order, recommend, merchandise and sell children's books. I am also an aspiring children's author.

  • Favorite childhood book: The Best-Loved Doll by Rebecca Caudill.

  • What children’s book character are you most like? I think that I am most like the character Mandy from Julie Andrews Edwards' 1971 book, Mandy.

  • Favorite RIF memory: I couldn't wait for the bookmobile to pull into the parking lot. The man who helped me pick out books always made me laugh. He was very kind and always remembered my name.

  • 70'sDo you still have any of your RIF books? Yes, but they belong to my children now.

  • What do you read now? Lots and lots of childrens books. Usually several at a time. I will list of few of my favorites that I am reading right now: Eldest by Christopher Paolini, The Seven Wonders of Sassafras Springs by Betty Birney and Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin. If I can find the time to read something extra I usually choose historical or non-fiction adult books. I love Barbara Ehrenreich and Bruce Feiler. For pure fun though, you can't beat Stephen King or Sue Monk Kidd.
