Pam Bender
- RIF alum years: 1974-79
-
How long were you in the RIF program? Five years
-
As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? Nurse, doctor, international corporate lawyer (really—heaven knows where I came up with that!)
-
Now that you are grown up, what do you do? Director of Special Literacy Programs for Reading Is Fundamental!
-
Favorite childhood book: Lots, but Harriet the Spy is at/near the top of the list.
-
What children’s book character are you most like? Ooh. Tough question. Growing up, I always saw a lot of myself in the characters in Madeleine L'Engle's books—Vicky Austin, Meg Murry, Phillipa Gregory.
-
Favorite RIF memory: Knowing that there were a few days a year where I could choose my own book out of hundreds and hundreds was really exciting. We always had books in the house and went to the library, but RIF days were extra special!
-
Do you still have any of your RIF books? Yep, much to my parents' dismay, since they're storing my childhood books!
-
What do you read now? Fiction, nonfiction, literary criticism—everything!
