Andrea's Story
The following is a story shared by a RIF alumna. Learn how RIF made an impact on Andrea's childhood.
Andrea's Letter: I wanted to commend you for offering this program to students. I am a living testimony that the RIF program is beneficial. Since I was in elementary school, I was tracked as the "quiet" one and placed under ESL classes. This proved to be a challenge for me because I was actually very efficient in speaking the English language.
Since the RIF program, I committed myself to reading as many books as possible, beginning with the first one that was disbursed to me every three months or so. From the years that followed, I -- as well as those tracking me in the lower rank of the class -- began to realize my love for learning through books and reading. By the time I reached middle school I was taking four chapter books at a time and reading them from the first page to the last.
Now that I am twenty and attending the University of California Santa Cruz, I am grateful that this program gave me the gift of reading. While studying here I am also thankful to see the necessity that reading is for the children and adolescents of our schools, and I am determined to see that reading remains to be as fundamental as the day I was given my first book.
Thank you once again. Continue with your wonderful spirit for giving this gift to others. God bless you all.
