Bernadine's Story

The following is a story shared by a former RIF kid. Learn how RIF made an impact on Bernadine's childhood.

Bernadine's Letter:
In my middle school years I was a RIF student. Just about every year at La Merced Intermediate School I was shuffled into the school library and was presented with tables and tables of books. A woman spoke to us as we walked up to the tables and said, "You can pick any book you want." "Any book?" I replied. "Yes ANY book." she said. I was amazed that people would come to our school and give us books, even the big thick chapter books were free.

It was in middle school that I really developed my love for reading. I was an active participant in the Scholastic Book Club program, and knowing how much the books cost I was extremely grateful for a free choice from RIF.

Being a participant in RIF made me feel special. To be able to hold a brand new crisp book in my hands meant so much to me. My memories of RIF are joyous and I would like to thank RIF for helping me develop a love of reading.

I am now passing along that joy of reading to my sixth grade students each year in my classroom. I have a well stocked library with books mostly in grade levels one through eight and encourage my students to read, read, read. Not only will their reading improve along with their writing and knowledge about the world, but they will develop a great passion.

Thanks again for the great memories and inspiration!
