What is RIF?

Reading Is Fundamental, Inc. (RIF), founded in 1966, works to build a literate nation by helping young people discover the joy of reading. RIF’s highest priority is to serve the nation’s underserved children and families through the development and delivery of literacy programs and campaigns that motivate youth to read regularly.

One of RIF’s main missions is to help every child believe in the value of books and the importance of reading. RIF also assists children and their families with the fundamental resources children need to become motivated to read. To accomplish these goals, RIF provides free reading resources to families, children, and educators on its website, http://www.rif.org/. These resources include activities, tips, articles, contests, interviews, and games. The website has sections aimed at parents, educators, and kids, all of which are updated regularly with fun and free content.

RIF also champions literacy with its book distribution programs. Through a national, grassroots network of 450,000 community volunteers at 25,000 RIF program sites, 5.1 million children are provided with 16.5 million new, free books and other essential literacy resources each year. For more information and to access reading resources, visit RIF's website at www.rif.org.

RIF’s programs focus highest priority on the neediest children from birth through age 11.  RIF utilizes a national volunteer corps of parents, teachers, librarians, and other community members to provide effective literacy programs to children and their families in every U.S. state and territory. RIF's accomplishments are due in part to the generous support of the U.S. Department of Education, corporations, foundations, community organizations, and thousands of individuals.

On September 15, 2004, RIF officially launched its first-ever national campaign aimed at promoting early childhood literacy among Latino families in the United States. The campaign includes this bilingual website, a parent training video, and public service announcements featuring television personalities Jorge Ramos and Cristina Saralegui.
