Grow a Green Thumb

An indoor garden is an easy and fun way to learn about where your food comes from. Plus, it makes for a tasty treat as your garden starts to sprout.

Materials:
• Soil
• Herb seeds, such as oregano, basil, and chives
• Drill or screwdriver
• Container (see below for ideas)

Ages:
All

1. Look around your house for unusual things that could be turned into a container for your garden. For example, a toy truck, an old pair of boots, or a chipped mug would work well.
2. Ask a grown-up to help you drill or poke a hole in the bottom of your container. This will allow water to drain through the soil.
3. Plant your seeds and water them according to the directions on the seed packet. Place them near a window to ensure that they get plenty of sunshine.
4. After several days, your herbs will start to grow.
5. Once your plants are a few inches tall, you can trim them and use the cuttings in a recipe. Check out a few cookbooks from the library and see how many recipes you and your family can make using your herbs. Yum!
