RIF's Back-to-School Writing Contest: Winning Essay

The Hectic First Day of School
By Makayla P.
Age 10
Jackson, MS

Summer faded fast! I couldn’t believe it was school time already. I didn’t want to get up in the morning but I did anyway. And this is how my day went …

I woke up to the sound of my alarm clock. I walked over to my closet, opened the door and pencils, books, boxes, clothes, anything and everything that was in my closet fell on my head. I finally managed to get my clothes out of my chest of drawers. I got out my favorite shirt and some jeans. When I checked the clock I had wasted 34 minutes already! When I finally got my things together my bus was pulling into our neighborhood.

Just when I thought everything had gone bad they got worse. As I got onto the bus I tripped and landed head first on the steps. Kenyata, my neighbor, laughed so hard I thought she was going to faint. I picked up my things and made my way back to the back of the bus. I opened the window and my papers started flying everywhere. I was so embarrassed! My friends laugh so hard they thought it was funny, but I didn’t. As the bus pulled into the parking of the school I was getting my things together and got trampled. My teacher was on bus duty so she saw me and helped get my things in my backpack. She said to be more careful next time and I was on my way.

When I got to my room I found my seat and sat down. While I was doing my morning work somebody snuck up behind me and poured glue on my backpack so when I went to open it I would get glue all over my hands. That’s just what happened. After we finished checking our morning work I turned around to put away my things while talking to my friend and got glue all over my hands. It was sick and wrong man! When I finished trying to put my work away I went to the bathroom to wash my hands off but when I got there it was overflowing! I tried to walk carefully over to the sink to was my hands but it didn’t help any. I fell and slid across the floor and hit the wall and it hurt so bad! When my teacher came to see what all the commotion was about she found me on the floor and helped me up. I had a bruise the size of a golf ball! As my teacher walked into the room she picked up the little white phone that was on the wall that buzzed the office. She reported that the girls’ bathroom was overflowing.

After that incident we went over a few things in class and it was recess time. The first thing I ran to was the monkey bars! My friend and I did a cool trick on the bars. It was fun until someone kicked me in the nose and made it bleed. I jumped off the monkey bars and ran to me teacher. She rushed me to the bathroom to wash of f my nose. After I finished washing off my nose kids started flooding in! I made my quick get-away to my room. When I got there I told my teacher my nose hurt really bad. She told me to go call. When I got to the office I called my mom. She said she was on her way.

I got back to my classroom did a few worksheets and the intercom buzzed. They wanted me to go home. I packed my things and made a mad dash to the office! My mom was standing at the door waiting. I ran up to her and gave her a huge hug watching my nose of course. We went to the van and rove home. When we got there that was the end of my school day I relaxed the rest of the day! Well except for the bag of ice taped to my nose. That was my first day of school I hope yours was better!
