Marjorie's Fry Bread Recipe

Marjorie Morgan is a member of the Navajo Nation and works for the Navajo Tourism Department.  When she was growing up, she learned how to cook fry bread by watching her mother and grandmother.  She says fry bread goes great with a bowl of stew, can be used as a taco shell, or can be served with honey and powdered sugar.

Would you like to enjoy fry bread as a snack or a dessert? Ask a grown-up to help you make this traditional American Indian dish.  All you have to do is follow Marjorie's recipe below!

Did you know that fry bread is the
official "state bread" of South Dakota?

Ingredients:

4 cups flour
1 1/2 cups warm water
1 cup vegetable oil or shortening
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt

Directions:

  1. Mix flour, baking powder, and salt together in a bowl.

  2. Slowly stir warm water into the bowl until it forms into a soft dough.

  3. Cover the bowl with a kitchen towel and let it sit for 30 minutes (this softens the dough).

  4. Ask a grown-up heat vegetable oil in a frying pan.

  5. Pull an egg-sized piece of dough and place it on a cutting board. Use a rolling pin to roll it into a thin circle.

  6. Ask a grown-up to place the circle into the hot oil.

  7. When both sides of the bread are golden brown, place the bread on paper towels to drain.

  8. Once the bread has cooled, open your mouth because it's time to eat!

If you have a sweet tooth, spread honey on top of the fry bread and sprinkle it with powdered sugar and cinnamon.  It's mmm-hmmm delicious!
