This Month's Reading Superstar!
lakey peterson

Lakey Peterson is a member of the USA 2011 National Surf Team

Background: Lakey is the first female surfer to complete an aerial maneuver in a woman's surfing competition at any level. Her feat is often called the turning point in female surfing. She is recognized as being at the forefront of her sport, pushing the next generation of female surfers to levels never seen before. She was the first pick for the USA 2011 National Surf Team.

The Santa Barbara native has been surfing for the last 10 years and isn't the only talented Peterson. Her mother, Sue, was an record-holding Olympic swimmer and her grandfather, Herbert Peterson, invented the Egg McMuffin.

Interview
RIF:  When did you know you wanted to be a competitive surfer?

Lakey Peterson: I realized I wanted to be a pro-surfer after my first year of competing.  I played a lot of other sports growing up, and they were all super fun, but surfing is by far the best sport to compete in because it's like going to a beach party with your friends when you're at the contests! It's the best!

RIF: It takes a lot of practice to be a competitive surfer, when do you find the time to read?

Lakey Peterson: I home school because I travel so much. But ya, it is tricky at times to find a moment to read for sure. But I always find a way to make it happen!

RIF: What kinds of books do you like to read? What are you reading right now?

Lakey Peterson: Haha one book that I really did enjoy and get into is, just like every other teenage girl, the Twilight series. I never thought that I would like it, but I was quickly proven wrong after the first chapter. Right now in school I am reading Lord Of The Flies.  It's a pretty interesting read so far.

RIF: You’re the first woman to do an aerial trick in competition, how did you know it was time to do it?  Did you know you’d stick the landing?

Lakey Peterson: I never know what I am going to do on a wave, I just kind of take it as it comes. But the aerial was a really special moment for me, and I'm just trying to go higher and crazier now!!

RIF: Do you have any advice for other kids who might want to be competitive surfers?

Lakey Peterson: My advice would be, don't ever let people tell you that you can't do something because you can. As long as you work hard enough you CAN!

RIF: You are now working with Nike, what does that involve?  Do you get to keep the clothes?

Lakey Peterson: One of the things working with Nike involves is being a part of the women's Nike 6.0 Surf movie. They are putting me in this surf movie, so I'm really excited about it. And yes, I get to keep LOTS of clothes and shoes.  It's pretty epic!

RIF: If you could be any book character, whom would you be? Why?

Lakey Peterson: I think I would be Bella in the Twilight series because she is going out with Edward! Haha...

RIF: What do you like to do in your free time?

Lakey Peterson: I like to play golf and tennis and hang at the beach with friends. I also love playing the guitar and being with my family.  Just being excited about life!

RIF:  Do you think reading helps you to be a better surfer? If so, how?

Lakey Peterson: I don't know if it helps you be a better surfer, but it is really cool how you can get so into a book that you feel like you a part of it.

RIF: What is your favorite surfer movie?

Lakey Peterson: My favorite movie is The Blind Side.

RIF: You've traveled all over the world for surfing competitions. What's the coolest place you've been?

Lakey Peterson: I think the coolest place I have ever been is HOME! It might sound weird, but I just love being home.  I love traveling to Austria and Bali and places like that but nothing compares to home for me.

RIF: You're in high school now. What do you want to do after you graduate?

Lakey Peterson: Well my teacher told me that I will be able to graduate by my junior year, so I am really excited about that! But after I graduate, I would just love to continue to pursue surfing and maybe find a nice boy to come along with me...haha!
