Chorus Lines

Source:

The RIF Guide to Encouraging Young Readers.

Categories:

Ages:

0-2, 3-5, 6-8

Summary:

Encourage audience participation during read-aloud time by choosing books that have lots of rhymes and repetition. Children won't be able to resist chiming in at the appropriate places, and the younger ones will enjoy the idea that they are helping you read.

AGES:  Prereaders, beginning readers

Good candidates for this category include Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?; The Little Engine That Could; Millions of Cats; Tikki Tikki Tembo; The House That Jack Built; Too Much Noise, A Fly Went By; and Mary Blooms

In many such stories, there is a growing list of items children have to remember as they recite the refrains with you. For example, in A Fly Went By, "The fly ran away, in fear of the frog, who ran from the cat, who ran from the dog" and on and on until the list includes a pig, cow, fox, man, and the poor lame sheep who started it all.
