RIF's Back-to-School Writing Contest: Winning Essay

Today Was the First Day
By Addison S.
Age 8
Buda, TX

Today was the first day of school. I walked in the classroom and it was very dirty. There was hair all over the floor, and it smelled like a zoo. My teacher was a fat llama with hairy legs. The students were all hanging on the ceiling because they were monkeys. I felt like I was having a dream, so I pinched myself, but I didn’t wake up.

All of a sudden, they dropped off of the ceiling, and started to walk towards me.  Everybody tried to eat my clothes. At lunch their fur got all over my lunch. We only had a five-minute recess. I tried to swing on the monkey bars, but my classmates hogged them. Then, my teacher chased me all over the playground and into the classroom.

I decided that I was going to ask my mom if I can move to another school. But, if she doesn’t let me, I will put on a monkey suit, eat bananas and start saying, “Uh, uh, uh,” just like everyone else.

Of course, my mom said no, so I started to say, “Uh, uh, uh.” I ate bananas and dressed like a monkey too. If you can’t beat them, join them!
