RIF's Back-to-School Writing Contest: Winning Essay

My First Day of D-T Asteroid School
By Sydney O.
Age 7
Mertztown, PA

When I woke up for my first day of school, I jumped out of bed, got dressed and ran outside to catch my bus. My space bus ride is long because I travel from Mars to Saturn.

When the bus stopped at D-T Asteroid school, I almost forgot to get off, but my friend reminded me it was time to go.

To enter my giant rocket-shaped school, all astro-students must scan their keycard. I went to Mr. Fiber’s class. His door was green and shaped like a triangle.

On my first day of school we learned about Earth.

When I’m older I want to be the first Martian to walk on Earth.

Mr. Fibers had just told us to open our math books when we heard a loud BOOM! Everybody ran outside to see what happened. We saw a crashed rocket ship. Our rescue team helped the fainted creatures from their burning ship. We took them to Miss Health’s office. I had never seen such unusual life forms.

Just then Principal Kuznick announced to the school that we have a crashed rocket ship in our playground. She said that all astro-students must do an essay or science project on the creatures, and when finished they may meet them. When it was my turn to meet them, I went over to one of the creatures and said, “What is your name?” He said, “I am Scot and this is my friend Jesse.” Then I asked another question, “Where are you from?” They said “Earth”, and everybody went “ooh, ahhh” and then everybody asked questions at the same time.

By the end of the day, we fixed their rocket ship and they were healed.

We said good-bye as the rocket flew away. That was the best fist day of school that I could ever have wished for. It’s not everyday that an alien like me gets to meet Earthlings!
