RIF's Back-to-School Writing Contest: Winning Essay

First Day Back
By Vincent M.
Age 9
Brooklyn, NY

On the first day of school I didn’t know what to expect.  From a nice non-screaming teacher to a five-eyed alien ready to suck out my game-playing knowledge and spit schoolwork back in, I overheard Mom saying tgere were seveb other kids in my class.  I’ll have so much work, much more advanced from my old school.

I was nervous and excited for some reason.  I kept thinking, will my new school have super-smart kids and I will not be able to keep up with them?  Will I be the only boy or new kid?  And eight hours of school?? It's two hours longer!  Mom said I would be having so much fun I won’t realize how fast time flies. So I left it at that and went to sleep.  I had a dream that night, an evil dream that was a nightmare.  I was playing games, when it turned off.  I was furious.  I checked the box for no damage.  I saw a tentacle, it wrapped around me.  I then saw a teacher, she sucked my knowledge of games and spat schoolwork back in just as I feared.  I woke up screaming, and hot.

It was the first day of school, and I’m ready.  I was filled with stress and fear.  I could barely stay up.  I entered the class with shock.  I had seven normal kids and nice truthful teacher.  The lunch was great, fries with vegetables.  I laughed when I thought of aliens.  I can finally be in a class I like.
