 Summary of Contest Rules for Summer Reading is Out of this World

  1. ELIGIBILITY: This contest is open only to legal residents of the U.S. who are ages 5 through 15 who are a member of the RIF Reading Planet Club.

  2. HOW TO ENTER:  This contest is only open to members of the RIF Reading Planet Club.
    1. Visit the RIF Reading Planet and sign up as a member of the Reading Planet Club. Make sure to check the box that you want to participate in the Summer Reading Challenge. Existing Reading Planet Club members can log on using their existing username and password to sign up for the challenge.
    2. A parent/guardian e-mail address is required to sign up for the challenge. If you do not know their e-mail address, have them help you fill out the form.
    3. An e-mail will be sent to the parent/guardian e-mail address provided. Parent/guardian must click on a link to grant permission and to enter additional information about the child participating.
    4. Once the parent/guardian grants permission, the child can log on to the Reading Planet Club and track their hours read using the RIF Reading Log.

      • 5-7 year olds must read 5 hours
      • 8-10 year olds must read 7 hours
      • 11-12 year olds must read 10 hours
      • 13-15 year olds must read 15 hours

    5. Once the child completes their reading goal, the parent/guardian will receive an e-mail to confirm that the child has completed the challenge. The parent/guardian must click on the link provided before September 1 to verify the completion of the challenge. Once the parent verifies that the child has completed the challenge, the child will receive a valid entry into the contest.

  3. PRIZES: Each child who completes a valid entry will be entered into a random drawing to win one of the 10,000 Target GiftCards as listed on our Prize page. Target will send prizes directly to the winners.

  4. GENERAL CONDITIONS: Winners and their parents, legal guardians, or teachers grant RIF the right to use and publish their first name online, or in any other media, in connection with the Contest.

Complete Official Rules

The "Summer Reading is Out of This World" (the "Contest") is intended for participation only in the United States or District of Columbia and shall be construed according to, and governed exclusively by, United States law.  Do not participate in the Contest if you are not a legal resident of the United States or DCphysically located in the United States or DC at the time of entry, or do not fall within the eligibility requirements set forth in the Official Rules below.

DESCRIPTION OF THE CONTEST.  The Summer Reading is Out of This World (the "Contest") is sponsored by Reading Is Fundamental, Inc. and Target ("Sponsors").  The Contest provides entrants with the opportunity to take a reading challenge, and if parent/guardian permission is granted, the challenge is completed, and parent/guardian completion verification is submitted, the entrant will receive one of the Prizes described on the Website.  "Entry forms" (defined below) will be accepted via the internet beginning on May 1, 2006 and ending on August 11, 2006 at 12 midnight EST. Parent/guardian verification submission period is scheduled to end on September 1, 2006 at 12 midnight EST. (Such entire period of time referred to herein as the "Submission Period").  By participating in the Contest, each entrant unconditionally accepts and agrees to comply with and abide by these Official Rules and the decisions of the Sponsors, which shall be final and binding in all respects.

WHO MAY ENTER.  The Contest is open only to those legal residents of the United States or District of Columbia who are between 5 and 15 years of age at the time of entry.  If the child's parents are employees ofthe Sponsors, or employees, officers or directors of Target Corporation, its respective parents, subsidiaries, and affiliated companies, or their IRS dependents and immediate family members (spouse, parents, children, siblings) the child is not eligible to enter or win.  The Contest is void where restricted or prohibited by law.  

HOW TO ENTER.  To participate in the Contest, each entrant must visit the www.rif.org/readingplanet website (the "Website") to find the Official Rules, and each entrant must follow the submission instructions.

  1. Each entrant must sign up as a member of the Reading Planet Club. As a member of the Reading Planet Club, the entrant will be given the option to participate in the Contest. Entrants who are existing members of the Reading Planet Club must log-in using their existing username and password and will then be presented with the option to participate in the Contest and must complete the online form.
  2. Each entrant must provide a parent/guardian e-mail address for permission. An e-mail will be sent to the address provided asking for permission verification. Parent/guardian must follow a link to grant permission and submit further information for the entrant. The parent/guardian must provide all required information in order for the entrant to qualify for the Contest. The parent/guardian is required to provide the home mailing address of the entrant to ensure prize delivery. In the case of questions concerning the privacy of the information being submitted, please refer to our privacy policy.
  3. Once permission is granted, entrant must log into the Website and log their hours read in the online RIF Reading Log.
    1. 5-7 year olds must read 5 hours
    2. 8-10 year olds must read 7 hours
    3. 11-12 year olds must read 10 hours
    4. 13-15 year olds must read 15 hours
  4. Upon completion of the Contest, an e-mail will be sent to the parent/guardian to verify completion of the Contest. Parent/guardian must follow link to confirm Contest completion and verify mailing address and contact information. If parent/guardian does not follow the verification link provided, the entrant will not be eligible for prize regardless of the Contest completion requirement.

WINNER SELECTION. Each child who receives parent/guardian permission, completes the Contest requirements, and obtains parent/guardian verification of completion will be entered into the prize drawing. At the end of the Submission Period, Sponsors will do a random drawing for winners of the prize.  The final determination of the Contest winners shall be made by the Sponsors in its sole discretion, and such determination shall be final and binding. 

RULES GOVERNING WINNERS: Sponsors shall have no liability for any winner notification that is lost, intercepted, or not received by the potential winner for any reason.  By accepting a prize, the winners agree that Reading Is Fundamental, Inc. may, without any limitation or further compensation, use his or her name, screen name, voice and/or likeness in any and all media for the purpose of advertising and promoting the Website, the Contest, or any other promotion, contest, or sweepstakes sponsored by the Promotion Entities.

PRIZES: Each child who completes a valid entry will be entered into a random drawing to win a $10 Target GiftCard. 10,000 winners will be selected in the random drawing from among all eligible entries on or about September 15. The GiftCard may be redeemed at any Target retail location or at Target.com. The GiftCard can only be used for future purchases at Target retail locations or for online purchases at Target.com but cannot be used to pay already established credit balances. The GiftCard may be used to pay online shipping charges, gift wrap, and/or taxes on purchases; and any remaining balance after any use will remain on the GiftCard.. Limit (1) prize per person; Limit (4) prizes per “household” (defined as mailing address). Prizes are not redeemable for cash or transferable.

DATES & DEADLINES / ANTICIPATED NUMBER OF CONTESTANTS.  Because of the unique nature and scope of the Contest, the Sponsors reserve the right, in addition to those other rights reserved herein, to modify any date(s) or deadline(s) set forth in these Official Rules or otherwise governing the Contest.

IMPORTANT.  PLEASE READ - GENERAL RELEASE AND LIMITATIONS ON LIABILITY.  By entering the Contest, entrants agree that: (1) any and all disputes, claims, and causes of action arising out of or connected with the Contest, or any prizes awarded, shall be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class action; (2) any and all claims, judgments and awards shall be limited to actual out-of-pocket costs incurred, including costs associated with entering the Contest, but in no event will attorneys’ fees be awarded or recoverable; and (3) under no circumstances will any entrant be permitted to obtain any award for, and entrant hereby knowingly and expressly waives all rights to seek, punitive, incidental or consequential damages and/or any other damages, other than actual out-of-pocket expenses, and/or any and all rights to have damages multiplied or otherwise increased.  Each entrant acknowledges and agrees that the Promotion Entities are not responsible for any costs, injuries, losses, or damages of any kind arising from or in connection with: (i) incomplete, lost, late, misdirected or illegible entries or for failure to receive entries due to any cause, including without limitation human, transmission, or technical problems, failures, or malfunctions of any kind, whether originating with sender, or otherwise, that may limit an entrant’s ability to participate in the Contest; (ii) any injury or damage resulting from participation in the Contest and/or the use of any prize (including, without limitation, claims, costs, injuries, losses and damages related to personal injuries, death, damage to, loss or destruction of property, or any claims, costs, injuries, losses, or damages related to or based on the entrant’s rights of publicity or privacy, or the entrant’s claim that he or she has somehow been defamed or portrayed in a false light.  The Sponsors assume no responsibility for any damage to an entrant’s computer system which is occasioned by accessing the Website or participating in the Contest, or for any computer system, phone line, hardware, software or program malfunctions, or other errors, failures, delayed computer transmissions or network connections that are human or technical in nature, or for the incorrect or inaccurate capture of information, or the failure to capture any information.\

FORCE MAJEURE.  In the event the Sponsors are prevented from continuing with the Contest by any event beyond its control, including but not limited to fire, flood, epidemic, earthquake, explosion, labor dispute or strike, act of God or public enemy, satellite or equipment failure, riot or civil disturbance, war (declared or undeclared) or any federal state or local government law, order, or regulation, order of any court or jurisdiction, or other cause not reasonably within the control of the non-performing party (each a "Force Majeure" event or occurrence), the Sponsors shall have the right to modify, suspend, or terminate the Contest.

INTERNET PROVISIONS.  The Sponsors reserve the right in its sole discretion to disqualify any individual who is found to be tampering with the entry process or the operation of the Contest or the Website; to be acting in violation of these Official Rules; or to be acting in an unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner, or with the intent to disrupt or undermine the legitimate operation of the Contest, or to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass any other person. Entries will be deemed VOID if incomplete or illegible.  The Sponsors reserve the right to modify, suspend, or terminate the Contest if it determines, in its sole discretion, that the Contest is technically impaired or corrupted or that fraud or technical problems, failures or malfunctions have destroyed or severely undermined the integrity and/or feasibility of the Contest.
