Reading Is Fundamental Receives Daniels Fund Grant to Support Care to Read Program
Young children benefit from program that fosters literacy and learning
WASHINGTON, December 11, 2008—Reading Is Fundamental (RIF), the nation's oldest and largest children and families' literacy nonprofit organization, announced today it has received a $25,000 Daniels Fund grant to support its Care to Read program.
Care to Read provides training and resources for staff in center– and home–based childcare programs to support children's emergent literacy skills. Workshops cover important topics in early literacy development and use children's literature to actively engage staff and illustrate literacy development concepts. Care to Read training is structured as a "train the trainer" model which prepares participants to return to their childcare programs and deliver the six workshops to their colleagues.
"This Daniels Fund grant will enable our Care to Read program to provide training to 50 caregivers, who will in turn train an average of 10 additional trainers," said Carol H. Rasco, RIF president and CEO. "By training staff to create literacy–rich environments for toddlers and preschoolers, we can foster literacy and learning for future readers at a critical stage in their language development."
Care to Read also aims to improve childcare center and family access to children's books and awareness of quality children's literature by providing a collection of children's books related to the training workshops. By promoting awareness of early literacy development, RIF training consultants motivate and prepare childcare staff to read to the children in their care and to support families in reading with their own children.
The Daniels Fund operates the Daniels Fund Scholarship Program and the Daniels Fund Grants Program in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. The Fund was established in 1997 by Bill Daniels, a pioneer in cable television known for his kindness and generosity to those in need. Visit danielsfund.org for more information..
