Reading Is Fundamental Statement in Memory of Jan Berenstain
WASHINGTON, March 1, 2012 – Carol H. Rasco, president and CEO of Reading Is Fundamental (RIF), made the following statement in tribute to The Berenstain Bears co-creator Jan Berenstain. Berenstain’s family is honoring her memory by directing memorial gifts to RIF – the nation’s largest children’s literacy nonprofit (www.rif.org/berenstain).
“For generations now, a beloved family of bears has made its way into the hearts of millions of children, including my own,” said Carol H. Rasco, president and CEO of RIF. “Jan and Stan Berenstain leave behind a series that will continue, long after their passing, to captivate new readers and spark a love of books. It is with deep sadness we learned of her loss, and we are so grateful that her family has chosen to honor Jan’s memory through tribute gifts to RIF.
Rasco continued, “Millions of children living in poverty in the United States have not even a single book. Every child deserves to be filled with wonder at the thought of that big treehouse down a sunny dirt road where a lovable bear family calls home. The Berenstain gifts will help us get closer to that reality.”
Jan Berenstain passed away Feb. 24, 2012. At the time of her death, more than 340 Berenstain Bears titles had been published.
