Reading Is Fundamental Welcomes Teachers, Students Back to School with "Choose Your Own Adventure" Class Writing Contest

WASHINGTON, August 28, 2007—Reading Is Fundamental (RIF), the nation's oldest and largest children's and family literacy organization, is encouraging teachers to welcome their students back to school with a class writing contest. Inspired by the Choose Your Own Adventure® book series by R.A. Montgomery, the contest will run from September 1, 2007 through October 31, 2007.

RIF's "Choose Your Own Adventure Class Writing Contest" invites teachers of grades 1 through 9 to have their students create an original Choose Your Own Adventure story as a class. Each student must write at least one section of the story. Teachers can then submit the class’s entry via e-mail to kids@rif.org. Entries will be judged in three categories based on grade level (1st–3rd, 4th–6th, 7th–9th). R.A. Montgomery, founding author of the series, will select the final winners. The winning classes will receive a prize pack including an autographed Choose Your Own Adventure book and a bonus RIF fun pack for each student.

The Choose Your Own Adventure series, published by Chooseco, is one of the most popular children’s book series of all time, with more than 250 million books printed in at least 38 languages. Each story is written from a second-person point of view, with the reader assuming the role of the protagonist and making choices that determine the main character’s actions in response to the plot and its outcome. The series has been used in classrooms from elementary school to college and has been widely commended for its appeal to reluctant readers.

"The Choose Your Own Adventure series has opened up the world of reading to millions of children," said Ernestine Benedict, RIF’s director of Online Communications. "We are pleased to have this opportunity to introduce a new generation of children to these wonderful books and the art of collaborative writing."

Complete contest rules can be found at www.rif.org starting September 1, 2007. The site will also feature an online copy of Journey Under the Sea, the second book in the Choose Your Own Adventure series, a teacher's guide, and other exciting back-to-school activities for teachers and their students. Winning entries from the contest will be published on the RIF website in early December.
