Volunteering Makes a Difference

RIF was founded on the premise that one person can make a difference in the life of one child and one community. Sure, we put books in the hands of the children that most need them (about 15 million books annually), but we’re more than that. RIF is a literacy resource, providing motivational activities and expertise to children in a variety of settings—from schools to libraries to daycare centers.

Our success depends upon people like you to serve as volunteers for our many literacy and book distribution programs—people who want to connect with children one on one; people who want to join with parents and educators to build a nation of readers. In short, our 400,000 dedicated volunteers serve as ambassadors, supporting RIF’s mission nationwide. They are as diverse as the programs and the children they serve:

  • Parents
  • Teachers
  • School administrators
  • Librarians
  • Reading and media specialists
  • High school and college students
  • Members of Kiwanis, the Junior League, Rotary, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Altrusa, and the American Association of University Women
  • Employees of national corporations and local businesses
  • RIF alumni—adults who grew up in RIF programs
  • Anyone interested

Volunteers are the engine that moves RIF programs forward. Duties may include:

  • Selecting and ordering books
  • Organizing and participating in book events
  • Reading books aloud and telling stories
  • Conducting reading activities
  • Contacting local celebrities, illustrators, and other community members who may want to volunteer
  • Raising awareness of RIF and children's literacy
